Kerygma Adult Sunday School Class

Overview

The Kerygma class is a discussion format, teacher led, adult oriented Sunday School class that focuses primarily on the study of the Bible and its life applications.

Who has ever visited a large American city, like New York, Boston or Chicago, and taken one of the tour buses where you can get on and off wherever you like? The Kerygma class is somewhat like that. We're taking a tour of the Bible, but don't follow a strict schedule and we often take detours and slow down when we need to spend more time. See our updated blog post here for more information about current topics and links to additional resources.

What does 'Kerygma' mean?

This is a Greek word translated in the New Testament variously as 'proclaim', 'preach', 'cry', ‘announce' and 'herald'. For example, in Luke 4: 17-21 (translation from NIV):

He [Jesus] went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written: "The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.”

The word, 'proclaim' is used three times in this reading from Isaiah and is translated from the Greek word, 'kerygma'.

In Matthew 9:35 (NIV):

Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness.

Jesus asks of His church to continue to proclaim the good news of the Kingdom. We honor that mission with the name of our class, Kerygma.

Who is the class for?

All adults who are interested in learning more about the Bible and how its teachings influence our lives and faith are welcome to attend and participate. It's important to note that regardless of prior knowledge and experience studying the Bible, participants will find something of value. Not only do we make no assumptions about what you know or believe about the Bible, we also honor your deeply held beliefs and faith. The class is ideal and will be informative and inspiring if you:

  • are single or attached,

  • are younger or older,

  • have children or not,

  • have been a Christian your whole life, became a Christian recently, or are exploring what it means to become a Christian,

  • or simply want a place to hang out while your children are in Sunday School.

Where and when?

The Kerygma class meets in the Garden View room (across the hall from the nursery rooms, next to the coffee station). Class times are from 9:45a - 10:30a on Sundays between the two worship services.
